For the last eight years or so, the quote above has been a mantra for me. I learned that virtually everything is interesting in one way or another. I just had to change how I looked at and interacted with the world and all the wonders it has to offer. It's been quite a ride.

My grandson has the photo bug too. A few weeks ago, we took an early ride to the park hoping to see some wildlife. Mother Nature did not disappoint.

This young bull was standing on the shore long enough for both of us to grab a few shots. We asked him to pose in the lake and after another moment or two, he stuck a toe in the water. The rest is history.

The Road Less Traveled

Two summers ago, fire raced through several parts of Rocky Mountain National Park. This road was on the edge of the flames. Some of these trees were charred but survived. The meadow was a charred mess, barren and lifeless.

This year the meadow is incredible, covered in thick green grass and frequented by elk and moose. Sometimes the fires that singe the edges of our road have hidden benefits. Just sayin'.

Although the blue hour does not have an official definition, the blue color spectrum is most prominent when the Sun is between 4° and 8° below the horizon. It occurs daily about 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset.

There were two ducks having breakfast with this young moose. I promise! The female of the duck pair was apparently hungrier than the boys as she spent most of her time under the water snacking. The ripples in front of the clueless male duck are all you get to see of her.

Even if you're not a collector or a fan, you've heard of the 57 Chevy. Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor could give you a week-long education in ten minutes about this giant in automotive history. You can learn more here.

By the way, the old fellow that restored this gem asked his wife what color he should paint it. She replied that it didn't matter, as long as it was red with orange flames.

In a couple of weeks, the trees here will leaf out. Luckily, I spotted this blue heron rookery before that happened! The blue heron is one of my favorite birds to photograph. To find this many in one place was, well, magical (at least, for me it was). We spent about an hour together and I left with so many questions - and pictures.

April in Colorado is a mixed bag. This week, we get the snow bag. That means a little more skiing up in the mountains and a little more water for the farmers. As for me, as long as I don't have to shovel it, I'm happy.

On a side note, the fence you see running through the picture serves as a barrier to local elk and deer herds. National Park authorities have established several of these conservation areas to limit over-grazing, allowing the the "parks" to recover. Now you know.

A cow's gotta go when a cow's gotta go. These cows were being moved 2-3 miles from one pasture to another closer to home. Three horses, 4 four-wheelers, 2 pick-up trucks and a police escort later, they were home. This was the highlight of 2022 for me...so far. Yea, I'm easily entertained.

Love is in the air in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. That's right, it's elk mating season, known to the locals as "the elk rut." Watching these big bulls settles their disagreements regarding the fair sex is amazing, exhilarating, and sometimes a little scary. Not unlike a Saturday night at a fine cowboy drinking establishment.

After the 2013 flood ravaged Four-Mile Canyon, Boulder’s beloved Anne U. White Trail was closed. It opened again just in time for Christmas 2019. Then COVID-19 hit in March, much of Boulder went on lockdown, and the trail closed again. It's open again! YAY!.

This is my favorite local hiking trail for so many reasons - the beauty, the solitude - oh, and you get to cross the stream 20 times! Score!

So who is Anne U White and how did she get such an awesome trail named for her? It's all here.

The signs are right in front of you. Deer, elk and possibly moose have all been here. Aspen are a preferred food group for these critters, both the bark and the foliage. The grey scars on the tree trunks are evidence of their munching.

Having made thousands of rush-hour drives on I-25, I can deeply relate to this image. Though, it's actually the Demolition Derby event at the annual Deer Trail Rodeo. Good old boys in not-so-good old cars battling it out in the dirt, all in good fun. No, really. The occasional fire is purely accidental. I love small town festivals and events. Everything seems so much more genuine and friendly.

A Slice of Granite

One thing the Rocky Mountains do not lack is granite. A walk in the woods would not be complete without granite boulders taller and wider than the Hulk! Most of them have cracks in them or, as seen here, have split. Over time, water seeps into tiny cracks and crevices, then freezes and expands. This process repeats year after year for many millenium. The result you see here started with tiny water droplets.

Next time you think the little things you do aren't making a difference, think about this picture.

National Western Stock Show Memories

January in Denver, Colorado is stock show month. Not this year though. The 115th annual National Western Stock Show has been postponed, like so many events, until next year. That means no longhorn cattle on the streets of Denver, no parade, no prize bull at tea time in the Brown Palace Hotel; and millions of dollars of lost revenue.

Lone Buffalo in Yellowstone

Much of Yellowstone's wildlife avoids the geyser basin area of the park. The ground can look stable and yet be a crunchy, fragile crust covering a flow of super-heated water. The exception to the rule is the American Bison. Mr. Bison doesn't seem to care. Small groups and single bison have been roaming this area since prehistoric times, though by 1902 poachers reduced the Yellowstone herd to about two dozen in number. Cameron Peak Fire

The Cameron Peak Fire is the largest wildfire to ever burn in Colorado. Started in August, it is still burning, though mostly contained.

One evening, we set out before sunset to catch golden hour and, if we were lucky, some night shots of the fire. As we crested a hill, we stopped in our tracks at this view. The fire was running hard and pumping out massive smoke clouds. Because of the smoke, the light had an eerie reddish-yellow quality that I think is captured here. The light was dim and played tricks with your visual perception. Definitely a WOW moment.

When you turn on the faucet at home, you can turn it off. When Mother Nature turns on the faucet, well let's just say... hold on!

This is Poudre Falls, a small waterfall to be sure, but mighty at certain times of the year. The meandering Poudre River is squeezed between two solid granite walls, where it drops about 50 feet. The resulting water flow is magnificent and, yes, very loud. Given another 10,000 or 20,000 years, the water will wear through the granite and carve a wider channel for itself. I say, good luck with that!

To me, spider webs are an engineering marvel. And... they totally freak me out when I walk through one unexpectedly!

After a storm, webs become really interesting. Water droplets travel the individual lines, sometimes spreading, other times flowing as a complete droplet. Sunlight transforms this spider meat market into a fabric decorated with more shiny baubles than your local jewelry store.

Look around. There is hidden beauty in nature... even if it freaks you out.

Conflagration in the Canyon

A snowy winter, an even wetter spring. Trees, brush, and grasses flourished. Early summer, the rain stopped and rarely fell until autumn. Trees, brush, and grasses dried out. Then, during a fire ban, a match or campfire or sparks during target shooting or a cigarette butt... That's all it took.

The Cameron Peak Fire ignited on August 13, 2020 and roared into the Colorado history books as the largest wildfire ever to occur in the state. Driven by gusting winds occasionally topping 60 mph, the conflagration has consumed over 200,000 acres of forested land and destroyed dream homes, livelihoods, wildlife, and habitat that will not regenerate for decades. I've recently shared images here of some of the beauty that has disappeared. This is what swallowed that beauty. And continues to consume Colorado, only 62% contained.

A match, or campfire, or sparks during target shooting, or a cigarette butt. That's all it took.

Wild mustangs have their own societal rules, not unlike their human counterparts. Following a visit to the watering hole and a nice dirt bath, apparently someone said or did something offensive or stupid. The scuffle was over as quickly as it started with no real damage. When we moved on, the four mustangs were enjoying a nibble of the finest the basin had to offer.

A while back, my girlfriend and I were out hunting moose with our cameras. We came to a T in the road and turned on the side that looked less traveled. It had to go somewhere, right? Forest Fire Sunrise

We've had a string of forest fires in Colorado this year resulting in over 100,000 acres of forest destroyed. The toll on wildlife and humans is also extremely heavy. In addition to lost homes and habitat, the smoke from the fires put air quality at dangerous levels for everyone, not just those with respiratory problems. Smoke from the fire dimmed the sun and dropped ash for days. It was surreal.

Reflecting Estes Park

A Moose and His Bird

Do big animals keep little animals for pets? Or, maybe they just hang out. Today's picture kinda makes it look like that but, no.

This was actually 5-10 minutes of excitement on the side of the lake. When Bullwinkle finished his fine dining experience in the water, he found a nice grassy spot to drip dry as he pondered the rest of his day.

Unfortunately, I believe he exited the water near the family home of a mating pair of red-wing blackbirds. They commenced letting him know that he and his large hooves were not welcome in their marsh. Repeatedly...over and over, again and again. It took a few minutes, but he finally complied with their request. Apparently in 2020, there's drama everywhere.

Traditionally, the USAF Thunderbirds perform at the graduation ceremony of the Air Force Academy. This year, they went above and beyond. The acrobatic demonstration team flew along the entire front range of the Rocky Mountains over cities and towns to salute the men and women on the front lines in the fight against Covid 19. You may have already seen a number of images of the team as they took time to fly over medical facilities. I chose to set up outside of Longmont in hopes of catching them over the Colorado countryside.

Considered some of the most intelligent birds, Steller's Jays have been known to weigh nuts with their beak to determine which is heaviest before flying back to their nest. They'll also raid your campsite if given the opportunity.

It's Been A Weird Year

I can't recall a year like this and we're only a quarter of the way through. Even a walk in the mountains turned a little squirrely. (Sorry squirrels, no offense meant.) I guess all you can do is roll with it.

Snowflake Sunrise

Sometimes, you get lucky. This morning was one of those. The sun was already rising when I arrived at the park. Rounding a curve on the way to my favorite sunrise location, I saw magic in the mirror. One sharp U-turn and a little spraying gravel later, Mother Nature gifted me this.

The air was full of blowing ice crystals that caught the light of the rising sun just as it cleared the mountain. The ice collected and diffused the rays into a golden glow that gently touched every part of the morning. Sometimes, you get lucky.

Ahhh, a drive in the mountains! This is a curve on one of the highest continuous paved roads in the United States. Trail Ridge Road crests at 12,183 feet, well above treeline. Just around the curve, the road is closed and will stay that way until roughly the last week of May. Twenty foot drifts and ferocious winds keep the autos and two-legged critters at bay. I know, it doesn't look that bad but I caught Mother Nature on a good day.

The elk rut season has started in the high country. That's mating season for the uninitiated in the ways of these majestic beasts. The bulls gather a harem of cow elk to increase their bloodline. Smaller bulls often attempt to "steal" a cow or two for themselves. This young bull is not a very good thief. He's about to have a very baaaad day.

Elk are amazing creatures. Throughout the spring and summer, the bulls will first shed their antlers and then grow a more magnificent pair. These regal gentlemen were just taking in the day carefully camouflaged by some tree branches. At least, that's what it looked like they were thinking. Come September, these fellows won't be friends. Each will gather a harem of cows and fight any bull that approaches. Now that's a sight to see!

I spent an amazing evening at the top of a local fourteener. That's a mountain peak taller than 14,000 feet (4267 meters) for my flatland friends. I arrived just before a thunderstorm sat on the peak and gifted the few of us that were up there with an up close and personal electrical light show, wind that turned the car into a rocking chair, and massive raindrops that sounded like stones hitting our questionable choice of viewing platform. Just kidding, there was no viewing; the rain and clouds were too thick. As the storm passed, a look in the mirror showed me this. So glad to be there!

Rocky Mountain Morning

Snow has not been in short supply in the Colorado mountains this year! It's a boon for Colorado, eradicating the drought conditions throughout the state. That snow will start melting in the next couple of weeks, filling the rivers, streams, and reservoirs. Let's hope it does that gradually.

Sometimes the universe smiles on you and drops the unexpected in your lap (or in this case, in front of your lens.) After a long day exploring the Oregon coast, we were beginning the three hour drive over the mountain, to the interstate, and eventually to our hotel. It was dark and we had no further plans for shooting that night. But... we saw the light - the Heceta Head Light. Cue the squealing tires. This is one of my favorite images from that magical moment. I had the opportunity to spend a few days on the Oregon coast and just... WOW!. There's just something relaxing about the sound of the surf. It clears the mind and feeds the soul. No picture can really capture the smell of the sea air, the crashing of the waves, and the cries of the gulls but I tried.
